Orangutan means 'person of the forest' and a subspecies of the Sumatran Orangutan - the Tapanuli - is critically endangered due to being hunted and because of the relentless destruction of Sumatra's rainforests, which has pushed all subspecies of the Sumatran orangutan to the edge of extinction. The only known population of Pongo tapanuliensis occurs in the uplands of the Batang Toru Ecosystem, in Sumatra.
